Spruce Timber Frame with a beautiful view

This 1766 SQFT timber frame home was both designed over two days and installed (timber frame and insulated roof) in two days. Located in Red Islands Cape Breton, the house is sited on a hillside oriented west overlooking the Bras D'or Lake.

The design process commenced with a preliminary meeting at our timber frame office looking at possibilities then a site visit. The goal of the two day site visit was to map out the design in relation to the site and clients needs. The first evening we walked the site for orientation noting favourable attributes (view, easy access) and challenges (locating house to take advantage of the view while maintaining privacy from the rood and accessing power lines).

The Elevations

The plan developed over the weekend consisted of an open plan in the front with the kitchen opening off it, a main floor master bedroom with a sewing room which can double as an office or with screens additional sleeping space as required. The loft overlooks the living room and dining room and offers a view of the water and setting sun. A small addition at the back has a laundry and mechanical room. The roof pitch is an 8:12 keeping the roof low while providing room upstairs.

Under construction.....

Materials, details and connections are visible expressions of the design and construction. This is exemplified in Crane lifting a section of the timber frame in placethe hybrid timber frame featured in the open main living areas and cathedral ceiling. Lower heavy timber beams over the living room and dining room with hanging lights define the spaces and make the cathedral area cozier. In the future they could support a second floor. There are a series of posts down the center of the home giving support for both second floor and roof. The exterior 2x6 wall supplies support for the floor joists and rafters.  The roof is a built up structural insulated roof which was pre-built and installed with a crane. This method offered an efficient quick weather tight build. Exterior timber frame entryway to introduce the idea that there is a craftsman approach to the home. The screened in porch is set to one side of the front deck to take advantage but not obstruct the view.
